Wages and Stages
Sin works in stages, but it always pays wages.
Romans 6:23 says the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. That verse gives us two realities: wages and gift. Sin pays what it owes. God gives what we could never earn.
If we want to move forward, we have to understand both.
Sin Has A Payout
Wages are what someone earns. Romans says the wages of sin is death.
That is not because God is cruel. It is because sin always destroys. It separates us from God, hardens our hearts, damages relationships, and leads us away from life.
Sin often looks harmless at first. It rarely announces the full cost upfront. But over time, it pays what it promised.
The gospel tells the truth about sin so we can receive the gift of grace.
Sin Often Works Gradually
People do not usually drift away all at once. A hard heart develops in stages.
We stop listening to God. We resist His voice. We excuse what He calls sin. We rename compromise as "my truth" or "not that big of a deal." Little by little, what once grieved us becomes normal.
That is why we need the Holy Spirit to keep our hearts tender.
Holiness is often a gradual process, but so is drifting. The question is which direction we are moving.
Everybody Is Bound To Something
Romans 6 also teaches that everyone is a servant to something. The cultural idea of total independence is not real freedom. We are either bound to sin, which leads to death, or surrendered to God, which leads to life.
Freedom in Christ is not the freedom to do whatever destroys us. It is the freedom to belong to God.
When we are bound to Jesus, we are no longer slaves to sin. Grace gives us a new Master and a new future.
The Gift Changes Everything
The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life.
That word "gift" matters. We do not earn eternal life. We receive it through Jesus. His grace saves us, transforms us, and teaches us to love God and love people.
The answer to sin is not self-improvement alone. The answer is surrender to Christ.
Moving Forward In Freedom
If sin works in stages, then repentance can begin with a step.
Tell the truth. Stop excusing compromise. Bring it into the light. Ask God to soften your heart. Choose obedience before the wages come due.
Jesus offers more than forgiveness for the past. He offers freedom for today.
Reflection Questions
- Where have you minimized the cost of sin?
- What stage of drift do you need to interrupt?
- What have you been calling freedom that may actually be slavery?
- How does the gift of God differ from the wages of sin?
- What step of repentance would move you toward life?
Suggested Prayer
Jesus, thank You for the free gift of eternal life. Show me where sin has been working in stages in my heart. I repent, surrender to You, and choose the freedom that comes from belonging to God. Amen.
