Moving Forward Is a Biblical Command
Faith is not only something we believe. Faith is something we live.
Hebrews 11 gives us what many people call the hall of faith. Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, and so many others are remembered not because their lives were easy or flawless, but because they trusted God enough to obey Him.
Some of them saw the promise fulfilled in their lifetime. Others saw it from a distance. But they kept moving forward by faith.
That is where Hebrews 12 begins: "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith…" In other words, because of the faithfulness of those who have gone before us, we do not have to start from scratch. We are stepping into a story.
Moving forward is not just a motivational phrase. It is a biblical command.
God is still calling His people to move forward.
Faith Sees What Is Not Yet Visible
Hebrews 11 says faith shows the reality of what we hope for. It is the evidence of things we cannot see.
That does not mean faith is imaginary. Faith sees something before it is visible to everyone else.
Noah built before rain came. Abraham obeyed before he knew the full destination. Sarah believed God could still keep His promise. Faith listens to God and moves before every detail is obvious.
That is what vision does. Without vision, people lose restraint and direction. But when God gives vision, people can flourish even in difficult places. Vision helps us keep walking through the valley. Vision helps us say, "God is not finished. There is more ahead."
The challenge is that our flesh often resists God-sized vision. We like promises we can control. We like outcomes we can manage. But faith keeps trusting even when the promise feels distant.
Strip Off What Is Slowing You Down
Hebrews 12 tells us to strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up.
There are two categories here: sin and weight.
Sin is what God has already called us to repent of and leave behind. But weight is different. Some things may not be sinful, yet they still slow us down. They take our attention, drain our hunger, dull our obedience, or keep us spiritually sluggish.
If we want to move forward, we have to be honest about both.
For some, the weight may be distraction. For others, it may be comfort, entertainment, social media, fear, bitterness, comparison, or a habit that keeps pulling energy away from obedience.
The question is not only, "Is this wrong?"
The better question may be, "Is this helping me run?"
Moving forward requires laying some things aside.
Run The Race God Set Before You
Hebrews 12 does not simply say to strip things off. It says to run with endurance the race God has set before us.
God has a race for you.
That means your life is not random. Your calling is not accidental. Your gifts, obedience, family, workplace, church, and season all matter. God has placed purpose in front of you.
But running requires endurance. It means we do not quit when obedience gets hard. It means we do not sit on the sidelines forever. It means we stop waiting for perfect conditions and take the next faithful step.
Fasting, prayer, and spiritual disciplines are not ways to earn God’s love. They are ways to align our hearts with God. They help us hear. They help us surrender. They help us move from "woe is me" to "how great is our God."
Faith gets us off the bench.
It is time to run.
Focus Is Warfare
Hebrews 12 tells us to run by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.
Focus matters because focus is warfare.
If the enemy can capture your focus, he can pull you away from peace, purpose, and obedience. John 10:10 tells us the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy. One of the ways he does that is through distraction.
We run better when we look at the finish line, not our feet.
When our eyes are fixed on our problems, we shrink. When our eyes are fixed on our failures, we stall. When our eyes are fixed on everyone else, we compare. But when our eyes are fixed on Jesus, we remember who called us, who sustains us, and who finishes what He starts.
Moving forward requires focus.
A Simple Next Step
The question is not complicated.
What do you need to lay aside?
And how will you fix your eyes on Jesus today?
Maybe your next step is prayer. Maybe it is fasting. Maybe it is opening your Bible again. Maybe it is joining a group, serving, forgiving, giving, apologizing, or taking a step you have delayed for too long.
You know your weight. God knows your race.
So write it down:
"I am moving forward by laying aside ______ and fixing my eyes on Jesus by ______."
It may not be as complicated as we make it.
Strip off the weight.
Run the race.
Fix your eyes on Jesus.
Reflection Questions
- What "weight" may be slowing you down, even if it is not obvious sin?
- Where has God been calling you to run, but you have stayed on the sidelines?
- What has captured too much of your focus lately?
- What promise or vision from God do you need to keep believing, even if it feels distant?
- What is one practical step you can take today to fix your eyes on Jesus?
Suggested Prayer
Jesus, help me move forward by faith. Show me what I need to lay aside, give me endurance to run the race You have set before me, and teach me to fix my eyes on You above every distraction. I trust that You are still leading me forward. Amen.
