Moving Forward Through Pain
Pain can make us feel stuck.
In 1 Kings 17, God had already provided for Elijah and the widow of Zarephath in a miraculous way. The flour and oil did not run out. There was provision in famine. There was daily evidence that God was faithful.
Then the widow’s son became sick, and his illness was so severe that there was no breath left in him.
That is the tension of faith. We can be obeying God, seeing His provision, and still walk through pain we did not expect. The presence of pain does not mean God has left the story. It means we need to learn how to move forward with Him in the middle of it.
Sit With Your Pain
The widow did not pretend everything was fine. She brought her pain into the open.
Many of us were never taught how to do that. We learned to minimize, avoid, blame, perform, or rush past grief. But pain that is never faced is rarely healed.
Moving forward in pain begins with honesty. Sit with what hurts. Name it before God. Let trusted people help carry it. God is not threatened by your grief, your questions, or your tears.
Pain needs presence before it needs a quick answer.
Stand On The Truth
Pain is a vulnerable place. The enemy loves to use suffering to insert lies: God is not good, God has forgotten you, you are alone, this will never change, or your story is over.
That is why we have to stand on the truth of Scripture.
James reminds us that life is like a morning fog. We are not promised control over tomorrow, but we are invited to trust the God who holds tomorrow. Scripture gives us something solid when emotions are loud and circumstances are confusing.
Truth does not deny pain. Truth gives pain a place to stand.
Bring What Hurts To God
Elijah took the child, carried him upstairs, and cried out to the Lord. He did not have a formula. He had faith enough to bring the impossible to God.
That is what prayer often looks like in pain. It may not sound polished. It may be desperate. It may be full of tears. But prayer turns pain toward the One who can meet us there.
God restored the boy’s life, and the widow saw again that the word of the Lord was true.
Pain Is Not The End
Moving forward does not mean pretending the pain did not happen. It means pain does not get the final word.
God can meet you in grief. He can strengthen you in weakness. He can hold you when life changes in a moment. He can bring resurrection into places that look beyond repair.
If you are hurting today, you do not have to run from God. Sit with your pain. Stand on truth. Bring it to Jesus.
You can move forward, even here.
Reflection Questions
- What pain have you been trying to avoid instead of bringing honestly to God?
- What lie has tried to attach itself to your pain?
- What Scripture truth do you need to stand on this week?
- Who can help you carry what you are walking through?
- What would it look like to pray honestly instead of perfectly?
Suggested Prayer
Jesus, meet me in the places that hurt. Help me be honest about my pain without losing sight of Your truth. Silence the lies of the enemy, strengthen my faith, and teach me to move forward with You. Amen.
